New Player Information

SYL is a spring season sport. Registration opens by December and closes by the end of the February. Registration is available online. Teams are organized by grades and location, focused on the Spokane South Hill, North Side and the Spokane Valley.

Timetable:  Teams are finalized by March and coaches will notify their teams. Practices begin in March based on field availability. League games start after Spring Break and run through early June. Some teams may play at out of town tournaments for 1 to 2 days on a weekend; this is based on the coaches and/or parents preferences. All SYL teams will play at the local Spokane Laxfest which is held at the Spokane Polo Fields in late May.

Practices & Games:  Team practices are held 2-3 days per week depending on the team. Location will be in your area of town. Your team coach will notify you of practice dates, times, and location. Most games will be held at the Spokane Polo Fields, which is west of Spokane off of Highway 2.  Game days will be either Wednesday evening or Sunday afternoons.

Equipment/Uniforms:   Please see the Required Equipment link for more details. Players will provide their equipment. SYL provides a uniform which will be returned at the end of the season.

Experience:  About 30% of the SYL players every year are new to the sport – even more at the younger levels. SYL is a rec league. Lacrosse is an easy game to pick up and learn, and you should expect your child to be able to perform well.

Coaches:  All coaches are volunteers, most are parents, and are selected by the SYL Board of Directors. Most have a background in lacrosse, but some are eager to learn and help the sport grow in the Spokane area. Training is available from experience coaches, including the high school level, and from US Lacrosse. If you are interested in being a coach, please .

Registration Fees:  The cost to register for SYL varies by grade and gender, ranging from $100 to $275 for boys and $100 to $175 for girls.  The largest expenses for lacrosse are field rental, referees, uniforms and equipment, accounting for over 70% of our annual cost. SYL is a non-profit organization.

All Players:  All players need to be current members of US Lacrosse. You can join or renew your membership at USLacrosse.org when your register. All players are required to agree to the Player’s Agreement, the Code of Conduct, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the Lystedt Law. Forms are available on line when you register.

Rules for Youth Lacrosse Please see the US Lacrosse tab for the latest rules for Boys or Girls.

Age and Eligibility Guidelines
US Lacrosse establishes eligibility guidelines in order to promote the game of lacrosse among the youth of America in a safe and sportsmanlike environment. To best achieve this goal, US Lacrosse believes that leagues, associations, and other organizers of youth lacrosse should seek to provide playing opportunities that, as much as possible, establish a "level playing field" among players of similar age, size, and ability.

League and Association Play. Leagues and associations should organize competition by age, and consider physical, cognitive, and emotional maturity when grouping players. For leagues or associations in which some local programs choose to organize their teams by grade, those teams should play in the age division determined by the oldest player on their roster.

Teams organized by grade and gender, with the maximum age difference between players in a youth game to no more than twenty-four (24) months for boys. A larger grade age is possible for girls’ teams. The following school grade groupings are:

7-8 grade

5-6 grade

3-4 grade

1-2 grade

Special Consideration
It is recommended that boys play on boy team and girls on girl teams. There are different rules for each team. Yet there are some cases that a girl would like to play on a boys’ team. A waiver process is available for a player to play-up to a higher grade level team. Ultimately it is up to SYL and the player’s athletes parents to agree.
